Struggling in Silence: Following student-athlete suicides, answers remain difficult

In September 2020, Ian Miskelley, a University of Michigan swimmer, completed suicide. Thirty-five college student-athletes took their own lives from 2003-12, according to a study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA), which was 7.3% of total student-athlete deaths during the time frame. Suicides were the third leading cause of death in the U.S. for people aged 15-24 in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
